Retail Technology Commercial for Inkling

Capitola Media produced a commercial video for San Francisco software company Inkling demonstrating how enterprise technology could support the people responsible for operating physical retail locations. Filmed on a sound stage in Los Angeles, the project was a complete production and postproduction engagement, taking the concept from production planning and filming through editorial and final delivery.

Inkling had evolved from its origins in digital publishing into an enterprise software company focused on making information and operational resources available to employees wherever they worked. An important part of that strategy centered on frontline employees in industries such as retail and food service, people who spent their working days in stores, restaurants, and other physical locations rather than behind desks.

For retailers with many stores, the problem was inherently distributed. Corporate teams needed ways to communicate procedures, priorities, training, and other operational information across a large network of locations. Store managers and employees, meanwhile, needed access to current information while actually doing their jobs. Inkling positioned mobile technology as a way to connect those two sides of the organization.

Bringing Retail Operations Technology to the Screen

Enterprise software can be difficult to communicate visually, particularly when the product works largely behind the scenes. The commercial therefore needed to translate a software platform and its operational benefits into an understandable physical environment.

Inkling was marketing technology that connected frontline retail teams with information, communications, and day to day tasks. Its Inkling Collaboration offering combined communication, task management, and analytics to give retailers greater visibility into execution across multiple locations. The larger idea was straightforward: technology used at headquarters could extend all the way to employees working on the store floor.

For the film, Capitola Media transformed that concept into a visual story built around a physical retail environment. Rather than relying entirely on interfaces, screen recordings, or abstract graphics, the production gave the technology a real world context and showed how digital systems could support what happens inside a store. That approach reflects Capitola Media’s broader work in technology video production, where the central challenge is often making an invisible or complex product understandable to a business audience.

Los Angeles White Cyclorama Sound Stage

The commercial was filmed on a large white cyclorama sound stage in Los Angeles, giving the production complete control over the retail environment, camera movement, performance and continuity. The cyc measured approximately 60 by 30 feet, providing enough width and depth to stage talent and product action without exposing the edge of the set.

A white cyc only works if the surface reads as truly continuous on camera. The floor and wall were freshly painted before filming so scuffs, seams and tonal inconsistencies would not become visible under the lights. Once the stage was prepared, crew access to the shooting surface was tightly controlled. Booties were used whenever anyone stepped onto the white floor, and unnecessary traffic was kept off the cyc to protect the finish through the shooting day.

Lighting a 60 x 30 Foot White Stage

The larger technical challenge was achieving even exposure across the full white background while still shaping the people and products in front of it. A cyc that falls off in brightness, develops hot spots or shifts color from one side to the other will immediately reveal itself as a lit surface rather than an apparently seamless environment.

The lighting plan therefore treated the background and the foreground as related but separate jobs. The cyc was illuminated broadly and evenly across its full width and depth, while the talent and retail action received their own controlled key, fill and separation. Careful metering and camera tests helped maintain a consistent white value across the frame without overexposing the background or washing out the subjects.

That balance also had to hold as the camera changed position. On a large white stage, a move that looks clean from one angle can expose a darker area, a footprint or a reflection from another. Camera blocking, lighting coverage and floor maintenance were coordinated together so the commercial could move through multiple setups without requiring the visual world to be rebuilt each time.

Production Discipline on a Seamless Stage

Shooting on white is deceptively unforgiving. Wardrobe, props, cables, stands and crew movement all become more visible against a clean background, and even a small mark on the floor can attract attention in a wide shot. The production team managed these details continuously, keeping equipment outside the active frame, resetting the surface as needed and protecting the cyc between takes.

Capitola Media managed the full production and postproduction process, coordinating the creative concept with crew, camera, lighting, art direction, talent and stage logistics. The controlled environment allowed the visual design to be built around the technology story rather than the limitations of an operating store. The production is an example of Capitola Media’s Los Angeles video production capabilities for technology companies and national brands that need access to sound stages, experienced crews and tightly managed studio environments.

From Production Through Postproduction

Capitola Media also carried the project through postproduction, maintaining continuity between what was designed for the stage and what ultimately appeared in the finished commercial. Editorial shaped the performances and visual storytelling into a concise explanation of the product, while finishing brought together the photographed environment, product messaging, and supporting visual elements.

Providing both production and postproduction allowed the project to be developed as a single visual system rather than as separate production stages. That integrated approach remains central to Capitola Media’s commercial video production work, particularly when technology companies need to turn complex products into clear stories for customers, partners, and enterprise decision makers.

The Inkling project demonstrates how a software product aimed at the operational side of physical retail can be communicated through a deliberately physical production. By recreating the retail environment on a Los Angeles sound stage, the commercial connected the technology to the people and places it was designed to support.
